Course description

This advanced class builds on your knowledge of Photoshop and expands your list of creative techniques. While this course is strongly oriented toward design details and functions, it also explores the realities that apply to the use of Photoshop. Colour correction and colour adjustment are stressed in various projects as well as issues of output for printing.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to create, collage, manipulate and colour correct pictures for professional use.

Unit 1 – Adjusting layers

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Work with layer blending
  • Use layer gradient and satin
  • Add/subtract layer selections
  • Clip layers
  • Adjust layers

Unit 2 – Advanced masking

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Create a layer mask from a dummy layer
  • Add/subtract/merge layer masks
  • Convert a mask to alpha, and alpha to mask
  • Make a clipping layer
  • Create a mask adjustment layer

Unit 3 – Colour correction

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Adjust levels by sampling colours
  • Create a curve (basic, custom & sampling points)
  • Match colours and use the info palette
  • Select, replace colours and exposure
  • Use channels

Unit 4 – Vector tools and path

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Work with the pen tool
  • Create and modify a path
  • Apply path effects
  • Convert a selection, mask to path
  • Export a path

Unit 5 – Transformation and perspective

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Work with the free form transformation
  • Distort, skew, warp, rotate, scale and perspective
  • Transform a selection

Unit 6 – Filters and photography effects

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Apply filters and adjust properties
  • Use the history brush and effects
  • Create texture and seamless tileable background

Unit 7 – Tips and tricks

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Tips and tricks for filters and effects
  • Work with non-linear history
  • Use lighting effects, extract and liquify

Teaching method

The concepts will be presented by your instructor and procedures will be demonstrated step-by-step. This will be followed up by practical exercises where you will be able to apply your newly acquired skills with the guidance of your instructor.
