Course description

In the course, participants will learn more advanced features in Illustrator, such as working with transparency, gradients, and patterns, using appearance attributes, styles and effects, and automating tasks.

Course objectives

By the end of this course, you should be able to use Illustrator’s advanced tools for creating more complex illustrations.

Unit 1 – Perspective drawing

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Draw 3d objects
  • Create a custom 3d grid
  • Create and modify blend objects

Unit 2 – Appearance and styles

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Create styles
  • Apply and modify effects
  • Create, modify and save appearance

Unit 3 – Working with transparency

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:
Identify blend modes
Create and modify transparent gradients

Unit 4 – Using brushes

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Identify brush types
  • Create and modify brushes
  • Create shapes for the pattern brush
  • Import brushes from a library

Unit 5 – Symbols

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Import symbols from a library
  • Create symbols from shapes
  • Use the symbol spray tool

Unit 6 – Using gradient mesh

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Create and modify gradient mesh
  • Convert shapes to mesh
  • Modify gradient colour in mesh
  • Add, remove and modify mesh anchor points

Unit 7 – Pathfinder and compound path

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Add, subtract, intersect and exclude shapes
  • Apply pathfinders to shapes
  • Create and modify compound path

Unit 8 – Working with graphs

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Create various types of graphs
  • Import and export graph data
  • Create custom graphs

Unit 9 – Using live objects

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Create and modify a live paint object
  • Create and modify a live trace
  • Expand and rasterize

Unit 10 – Colour management

By the end of this unit, you should be able to:

  • Produce consistent colours
  • Import and create colour swatches
  • Soft proof illustrations
  • Create colour separations

Teaching method

The concepts will be presented by your instructor and procedures will be demonstrated step-by-step. This will be followed up by practical exercises where you will be able to apply your newly acquired skills with the guidance of your instructor.
